Woodstock, New York

Our last stop on our recent road trip was Woodstock, NY. I knew little about the place before (except for the obvious ’69 festival – which, by the way, did not take place in Woodstock), but was pleasantly surprised. Except for the few hippies left, this place was a mishmash of touristy spots, great nature and Greatful Dead t-shirts.

We had splurged on inns in Maine, so this time we decided to do airbnb, which was the right choice. We stayed in a lovely cabin with a separate entrance and our hosts were amazingly friendly and helpful. Would recommend anyone going to Woodstock to stay here.

Day 1: Exploring

We had breakfast at home our first morning. There was a bakery just down the road called Bread Alone where we picked up some bagels (amazing) and croissants (not so much). We had breakfast at the same place the day after, see further down for review.

Our cabin was located in downtown Woodstock (which is literally just one street) so we decided to just walk around for a bit. It was _so_ hot outside on this particular day.

Hence, the water hole. There is one just 5 minutes from the main street, where all the cool kids hung out (and when I say kids, I really mean kids). I loved this place! I’m sure there are other even better ones if you decide to put your googling skills into it, but this was perfectly convenient because of the location.

We sat here for a while, just enjoying the cold water.

We continued on to visit the old Bearsville Studios, now converted into a theater (amongst some other things). The studio was opened in 1969 by Albert Grossman, Bob Dylan’s manager. My boyfriend would be able to tell you all about this – I literally just used Wikipedia to see why we were even here. Anyway, it was probably cool to see for someone like him who is really into Bob Dylan and The Band.

At night, we went to a local grocery store and bought stuff to make a simple pasta. We had not had a home cooked meal in three weeks time, so this was the only thing we were craving. Woodstock has a lot of good restaurants nearby but we only went to one – the local pizza joint. I’ll do a separate review on that, but it was average at best.

Day 2: Hiking

This time we had our breakfast at Bread Alone. I had french toast (my go-to whenever there’s a breakfast menu) and they were ah-mazing. They came served with maple syrup and this amazing cinnamon butter??! I have to try making this at home. We also ended up next to a friendly local man who looked like he definitely had been to the festival some 50 years prior. He gave us some useful information about Woodstock, much of which I’ve already forgotten.

After breakfast it was time to move our bodies. We hiked up the Overlook Mountain, part of the Catskill mountains and very close to the Woodstock centre. The hike itself was about 5 miles (8 km) round trip, and pretty difficult at it was very steep. At one point I was convinced I wouldn’t be able to go any further, but then we met an old couple in their 70’s on their way down so I figured hey, if they can do it, surely I can.

Once we got up there it was all forgiven and forgotten. The view was amazing. No pictures can do it justice – just go up and see for yourselves.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Oh, don’t mind me carrying an old juice container filled with water. We actually forgot water (on the hottest day ever!!) so my boyfriend had to knock on the door to the buddhist temple next to the hiking trail to ask for some. Luckily those monks are friendly people.

And that was Woodstock, ya’ll. All in all a great place, no matter what music you’re into.

Portillo’s delicious hot dogs

My grandma lives right down the street from a Portillo’s. Unless you’re from Chicagoland area, you may not have heard of it, so let me guide you through one of the best fast food places there is.

The food is mostly italian style and influenced by traditional Chicago food, such as hot dogs and Italian beef sandwhiches (although there’s plenty of other food, too).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Both the exterior and interior is referencing a cute retro diner look.

I’ve been here several times, but usually choose the same thing. Boring I know, but since I only get to have it once a year (at best!) I’m gonna stick to my regular order, which you can see below.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is a Jumbo Chili Cheese dog, which is essentially a hot dog drenched in chili, onions and cheese. Healthy? Probably not. Delicious? You bet!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Too much cheese in one order, one might say. I believe there never really is an excuse NOT to eat cheese everything. Also, not pictured – chocolate cake shake. Because why not, really?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Literally drooling looking back at these pictures. See you next time I’m around, Portillo’s.

Patched up denim jacket

My latest project involved a thrifted denim jacket (originally from H&M) and some cute food patches I bought off of Aliexpress.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I pinned my patches on to find the best pattern, and then unpinned and glued them on one by one.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Afterwards I decided that glue wasn’t enough, so I also sewed them on. I didn’t sew all the way around each patch as that would take ages – depending on the shape of the patch I just sewed in three or four corners to make it sit.

I’m super happy with the result as it was something that I had wanted to do for quite some time now! You can buy the same patches here.

Resin plant decoration

How CUTE is this… thing?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Yet another result of spending too much time on Aliexpress and buying things that are cute but totally unnecessary for the house. This is a plant decoration made out of resin (which I think is hard plastic, pretty much). There are loads and loads of these types of decorations on Aliexpress so it must be a real thing in Asia.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I bought mine here for roughly $1.

Macaroon storage box

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I bought this macaroon storage box off of Aliexpress a while back, and it just arrived in the mail. I actually saw this initially at Urban Outfitters but never bought it, so I figured I would now that it was so cheap. I paid $1.5 for mine and shipping took roughly 2 weeks.

It’s super cute and tiny, and probably completely pointless as nothing really fits into it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I figured it would make great for keeping on your night stand so you could put your earrings in it whenever you needed to take them off before going to bed. It would also work great as a pill box, or for keeping small jewellery in while travelling.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Also a fan of pointless cute things? Buy yours here!

(Also, if I was wearing lenses, I would TOTALLY buy this to go with it)

Growing tomato plants (amongst other things…)

I present to you… my latest hobby!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I have never grown anything from scratch (or, seeds) before, so I have literally called my mom asking her about every single step. Turns out it wasn’t that hard, though. Plus, google is your friend – I’m convinced there isn’t anything you can’t google the answer to.

If I could turn back time a month I would have made sure to remember to name what kind of plant was in each pot. Rookie mistake, I guess. Most of them are tomato plants anyway.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Just look at this beauty!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We’ll just have to see how these turn out, but I would definitely do this again. It’s so much fun watching them grow from day to day!
